Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes inflammation and sores (ulcers) in in your digestive tract. It affects the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.
Symptoms
- Belly pain or cramps
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Bleeding from the rectum
- Weight loss
Treatment
Treatment can include medication such as antibiotics, anti-diarrheal medications, or anti-inflammatory drugs. In some cases an immune system suppressor medication or surgery may also be recommended. Additionally, it is wise to be proactive about more frequent colon cancer screening due to increased risk.
