Diverticular Disease
Diverticular disease refers to a group of conditions that affect the digestive tract. Diverticula are small sacs of bulging tissue that can form in the lining of your digestive system, most often in the colon. When one or more of the pouches become inflamed or infected, that condition is known as diverticulitis.
Symptoms
- Abdominal pain
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
Treatment
If your symptoms are mild, treatment can include an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Tylenol, or antibiotics to treat infection. Eating a high fiber diet that includes fruits and vegetables, legumes, and whole grains will help reduce flare-ups. In more severe cases surgery may be required.
Diverticular disease can be difficult to diagnose because abdominal pain is a symptom of many digestive disorders. If you think you are experiencing symptoms, please meet with one of our specialists to learn more and protect your health.
